Report issues to the Township of Scugog to help us keep our community safe and active.

Personal information included with by-law complaints is protected by to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protections of Privacy Act.

File a complaint

The Chief Building Official looks into complaints they receive and confirms they are valid. Once a Building By-law (45-18) violation is confirmed, a Building Official seek voluntary compliance with our Building By-law by issuing a notice.  If this does not work, the next step includes an Order to Comply and or legal charges.

Written complaints must be forwarded to the municipality; staff will not initiate an investigation without first receiving the complaint in writing.

As of January 3, for new concerns/complaints, The Township of Scugog is pleased to offer residents Cloudpermit - an online system to submit concerns/complaints. Please do not start a new concern if you have one in progress as they follow the current priority process. Please be patient while we make these improvements to serve you better.

Step 4: Submit for review.

The By-law Enforcement Office looks into complaints they receive and confirms they are valid. Once a by-law violation is confirmed, the By-law Enforcement Office will strive to obtain voluntary compliance with our by-laws through public education, and mediation. If this does not work, the next step includes a Notice, an Order Requiring Compliance or legal charges.

Written complaints must be forwarded to the municipality; while the municipality will offer assistance and direction with respect to a By-law concern over the phone; staff will not initiate an investigation without first receiving the complaint in writing.

The Township of Scugog is committed to improvement by facilitating an environment where all feedback is addressed fairly, respectfully, transparently, and within a timely manor. Report General Feedback. This would be a compliment, complaint or comment by department.

 

Making a claim against a municipality 

If you believe that the Township of Scugog has been negligent in its maintenance of municipal facilities, roads, sidewalks, storm sewers, or parks, which has caused you injury or damage to your property, you can file a notice of claim against the Township of Scugog. 

What to consider when making a claim 

We recommend you consult your insurance company or insurance representative first, for advice on how to deal with your injury or damage. Your insurance coverage may be more extensive than what you can recover from the municipality.

If your insurer believes the Township of Scugog is responsible for your damages, they may seek compensation against the Township of Scugog on your behalf.

The Township of Scugog only provides consideration of your claim if it is legally responsible for your damage. 

Limitations and timelines 

There may be limitation periods and other procedural timelines that apply to your claim. You should consult your own legal counsel or insurer as required. 

Notice of understanding 

The use of profanity, abuse, threats, or bullying may result in the examiner, independent adjuster or municipal staff assigned to the claim being unable to provide any further contact, support, or consideration of your claim.

To make a claim against the Township of Scugog for injury or damages you must complete the online Municipal Claim Form.

 

The Township of Scugog is a part of Road Watch, a community volunteer-based program to make roads safe for the community. Various towns and cities throughout Ontario take part in this program, including our neighbouring municipalities of OshawaWhitbyClaringtonPickering and the Township of Uxbridge.

Road Watch members include the Durham Regional Police Service, members of council, Township staff and members of the community. Together they make our streets safe for everyone.

You can help your community by reporting incidents, such as:

  • Speeding
  • Careless driving
  • Disobeying stop signs and traffic signals
  • Other unlawful and dangerous driving behaviour

In phase one of our multi year initiative, residents can visit myscugogconnected.ca to submit and track roads and sidewalk service requests like reporting a pothole, a culvert issue or other request related to roads, and view a map of other ongoing service requests occurring across the municipality.
